Our Staff

Hi! I‛m Athena Chappell.

A native of Belmont, North Carolina but moved across the line to York, SC in 1986. I‛m truly a southern girl with southern grit!

I teamed up with Chappell‛s in 1989. I cared for Dr. John‛s equine patients until he built the equine hospital in 2002. Since 2003 I have been the business manager for both hospitals and I am happily married to John. I enjoy the Lord‛s work, and all opportunities to serve Him. I love to help clients care for their animals.

I started at Chappell‛s in February 2005. You will catch me at the front desk in client services. I‛m here to help you in any way that I can.

Hello, how are you? I'm Shane Sigmon.

I am a native of Belmont, North Carolina. I moved to York, South Carolina in 1992 and still reside there. I have been married for twenty-five years, a father of three, and grandfather of three.

I joined Chappell Animal and Equine Services in May 2010, as the maintenance technician for both hospitals and grounds. I enjoy riding the ATV with my son, fishing, and spending time with my family. I'm here to help the clients and their pets have a safe, clean, and nice visit.

Heyyyy! My name is Kristen Grubb.

I was born in Rock Hill, SC and currently reside here. As a girl, I grew up on a farm with horses, cows, and dogs. Living in that type of atmosphere has inspired me to pursue in the field of Veterinary Science. In order to accomplish that goal, I am currently enrolled at Clemson University majoring in Pre-vet and Animal Science.

I started my journey at Chappell Animal Hospital as a senior in high school working as an intern, eventually becoming a vet assistant. My goal is to make sure that every animal has the fighting chance they deserve! I wish everyone the best of luck with all of your future endeavors. Have a great day and remember... GO TIGERS!

Our Doctors

Meet Dr. Libby J McKay, DVM

As a native South Carolinian who grew up in the Midlands, one of Libby‛s earliest memories involves being asked by “Mr. Knozit” what she wanted to be when she grew up... and she responded with a four-year-old‛s enthusiasm, “A horse doctor!”

Though still passionate about horses, now she just “plays” with them (trail riding, dressage), while her professional focus is on companion animals, primarily dogs and cats. After graduating from Clemson University in 1984, Libby studied at the University of Georgia where she developed an interest in dermatology and small animal behavior medicine before earning her DVM in 1988. Her first two years as a veterinarian were spent in a busy mixed animal practice where she says she saw “everything but pigs. “

She then moved to Lexington, where she managed and later purchased a semi-rural small animal clinic where she worked as a solo practitioner for 17 years before moving to the Rock Hill area and joining Chappell Animal Hospital in late 2007.

Libby enjoys many aspects and challenges of veterinary medicine, but she is most passionate about promoting and fostering the human-animal bond, and especially appreciates the opportunity to spend time with new puppy and kitten owners, making sure they get off to a good start with their new friend.

Outside of work, her many interests include gardening/landscaping, hiking, reading, history/old things, and “almost anything Scottish.” She lives in rural western York County on a small farm property she shares with her four-legged family.

Meet “Dr. John” H Chappell III, DVM

John is a native of Rock Hill. He is a graduate of Clemson University and Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating in 1988, John returned home to begin Chappell Animal Hospital and in 1994 he also established Chappell Equine Services. He enjoys the diversity of working in his mixed animal practice.

Since 1988, John has been a member of SC Association of Veterinarians, American Veterinarian Medical Association, American Association of Equine Practitioners, and is an active alumnus of Tuskegee University.

John is an avid supporter both professionally and personally for York County communities that promote small and large animal events.

John and his wife, Athena, are members of Cornerstone Family Worship Center in York, were he is on the worship team and his wife teaches Sunday school. They both enjoy serving in church activities, work, and being outdoors. They reside on their farm in York, SC.
